Laura Parrish - Future Trainee and Vacation Scheme Attendee
What departments did you spend your Vacation Scheme in?
I spent the first week of my vacation scheme in the firm's Commercial Litigation department, and the second week in Private Client.
What work were you involved in and what did you gain from your experience? Did the scheme meet your expectations?
I experienced a broad range of work during my time at Forsters. On my very first day in the Litigation department, I was tasked with drafting a memo to a client, proof-reading documents and reading through case files for a discussion. The rest of the week was spent preparing an appeal submission for the Supreme Court. I was given responsibility for researching the process of appeal and preparing the documents necessary. When the bundle was ready, I accompanied one of the trainees on a very exciting trip to Parliament Square to submit the documents by the deadline. My time in the Private Client department was quieter, but no less interesting. I was involved in researching the impact of Capital Gains tax on foreign properties, drafting emails to clients and proof-reading wills and trust agreements.
The two weeks I spent at Forsters exceeded my expectations. Having attended several vacation schemes in the past, I was surprised by the level and variety of the work I was given. Everyone I met was approachable and went out of their way to explain what they were doing and help me where necessary. The various presentations we were given and the time spent with trainees also gave me a real insight into the type of work offered by the firm.
What were your impressions of Forsters' socially, overall and location wise?
Forsters is a very friendly and welcoming firm and a real effort was made to include us in the firm's social life. We went for lunch and drinks with the trainees, were encouraged to participate in the weekly softball matches (and mini-picnics) in Hyde Park and were later invited to attend the firm's annual Treasure Hunt around Mayfair, which was followed by a delicious barbeque on the terrace. During this evening in particular, I was taken aback by the approachability of everyone at the firm – from secretaries to senior partners. The location of Forsters is also a real selling point. Not only are the offices themselves (in a Grade II listed building on Hill Street) attractive and pleasant to work in, with an enviable outside space for social events, but the general atmosphere of Mayfair is tranquil and relaxed – a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the city. The fact that the firm is only a 'hop, skip and a jump' from the delights of Bond Street and the green space of Hyde Park is an added bonus.
What were the main deciding factors that made you choose Forsters to train at?
I initially applied for a vacation scheme at Forsters because I was interested in Private Client and Heritage Property work and wished to gain further experience of these practice areas. I was also attracted to the firm because of the contrast it offered in terms of size, location and atmosphere to my previous 'Magic Circle' vacation schemes. I was not disappointed. Forsters stands out both in terms of reputation and approachability. It offers its trainees a high calibre of work, impressive levels of early responsibility and a wide array of practice areas to choose from. This diversity is supplemented by a six-seat training structure which provides much more opportunity for 'testing the water' than the traditional four. These factors, combined with the firm's welcoming atmosphere and top-notch client base, meant that – within a few days of beginning my Vacation Scheme – my heart was set on training here.
